Ann Podolske, We Hardly Knew Ye (1959-2010)

Ann passed away today, June 5, 2010 at noon. She was at peace, surrounded by family and friends.

The visitation will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton, Mass.

A celebration of Ann's life will take place on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at the Haydenville Congregational Church, 143 Main Street, Haydenville, Mass. All are welcome (the Bombshell will be there too!). Refreshments will be served immediately following.

Ann wrote her own obituary, which will appear in the Hampshire Gazette and Springfield Republican at some point in the next few days.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ann's name can be made to one or more of her favorite organizations: PFLAG or Haydenville Congregational Church.

Jennifer Myszkowski will be posting some of her comedy on YouTube and will post a link here.

xx00,

Ann's family, friends and the Bombshell

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Ann, your courage and humor and openness to the truth of your impending death inspired us all. I don't really know how this works, but I hope you are with Linda, which would be right and good.

Sadly, I never got to meet Ann. But I know this was a woman that left behind a legacy of love, friendship and hope. God bless all of her caring friends and her family and the bombshell of course.

I sent this poem to Ann when Linda passed away. She enjoyed it so I wanted to share it with her friends.

Give me friends who will share my pain and celebrate my success. Lord, walk with me when my friends begin to go the way of the world. As my closest friends make their transition from mortal to immortal and perishable to the imperishable, help me to make new friends and build upon the friendships I already possess. Fill me with memories of the better days gone by. Lord, as I strain toward the twilight of life, surround me with people who love me and care for me for who I am, as I am. When it is all over, grant me a reunion in heaven where friends can laugh, rejoice and praise your name into eternity. Knowing that a close family member can be your friend also... But most of all Lord, please make my family and friends know that I walk their battles and joy with them through you oh Lord.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we pray. Amen.

Just got word today via the Peace Corps grapevine that Ann is no more.

I lost track of Ann after she moved to Northampton but was just thinking of her the other day. She was truly hilarious and had no trouble sparring with the best of them. She was also generous to a fault, sharing her would-be boyfriend with me (oh, the irony of it all). Thanks, Ann! She was also an excellent host in NYC.

Lots of Morocco volunteers are reflecting on their memories of her today: energetic, smart, funny, party-girl extraordinaire. I'm glad she found her niche in western Mass. She'll be truly missed.

Ann,

I can not believe the impact you made upon my being. Having known you in a business sense did not allow the opportunity to get to know very well, however your personality and wonderful energy is something that has stayed with me. Even as you have left our company some eighteen months ago you still come to mind. The way you lived and faced your final months were so beautiful and true they are a constant reminder and inspiration of how I should be living my life.

Thank you for being you and teaching me,
Ron
